CrimeView Incident Map Help
Start Tab
Start here! The Crime Incident Map application begins with the start tab where help information
about how to create maps and reports of recent crimes in your area.
- Begin your search by selecting the What tab (or Next button) to select what crime types to map.
- Continue by selecting the Where tab (or Next button) to identify where to look for crime incidents.
- Complete your search criteria by selecting the When tab (or Next button) to limit your search to a specific period of time.
- Click on the Search button to search for crimes using the criteria you specified.
Navigate between tabs using the Next and Prev buttons, or by selecting the next available tab.
- Use the Next button to move to the next tab.
- The Prev button will be available to move to a tab you have previously visited.
- The Search button will become available when you have made enough selections to conduct a search. This will move you to the Results tab, containing a map of the crime incidents you have selected.
- The Help button displays this help document at any time.
What Tab
What are you looking for? The What tab allows you to focus your search on one or more crime types, or map all crime types. Select individual crime types by clicking on their check boxes. Select all crime types at once by using the
Select All button. The
Unselect All button clears all crime type selections. Use the
Next button to move on to the Where tab. Use the
Prev button to move to the previous tab.
Where Tab
Where do you want to look for crimes? The Where tab allows you to identify the geographic location to search for crime incidents. Four geographic search methods are available:
- Use Near An Address to find crimes with in proximity of an address or intersection.
- Use Near A Landmark to find crimes with in a specified distance of a landmark or map feature.
- Use Within A Boundary to find crimes within one or more boundaries.
- To look everywhere, check the No geographic selection check box.
Searching For Crime Incidents Near An Address
To find crime incidents near a valid address or intersection, complete the following steps:
- Click on the Near An Address tab.
- Enter in a Street Address such as "2265 J St" on the first line only or a Street such as "J St" and Cross Street such as "26th St" in the two lines provided.
- Click the Next button. Use the Prev button to move to the previous tab.
If the address can be located, the map will be centered on that location and a buffer of the selected size will be visible around the address.
Searching For Crime Incidents Near A Landmark
To find crime incidents near a landmark location, such as a school or park, complete the following steps:
- Click on the Near A Landmark tab.
- Select a landmark layer from the layers list.
- Select the desired landmark name(s) from the names list.
- Click the Next button. Use the Prev button to move to the previous tab.
The map will be centered on the desired landmark(s) and a buffer of the selected size will be visible around the landmark(s) selected.
Searching For Crimes Within A Boundary
To find crime incidents within a boundary, complete the following steps:
- Click on the Within A Boundary tab.
- Select a boundary layer from the layers list.
- Select the desired boundary name(s) from the names list.
- Click the Next button. Use the Prev button to move to the previous tab.
The map will be centered on the desired boundary(s) with an outline visible around the selected boundary(s).
When Tab
When are you looking for crimes? The When tab allows you to optionally focus your search on the last one or more days of crime data provided. Select the number of days from the list. Use the Search button to perform the search. Use the Prev button to move to the previous tab.
Results Tab
The map! The Results tab includes the resulting map and legend, with the following map navigation tools available for panning, zooming, identifying, reporting, and printing.

The Zoom In button zooms in on the map a predefined percentage. |

The Zoom Out button zooms the map out a predefined percentage. |

The Recenter button centers the map around the desired address, school, park, neighborhood or police beat. |

The Identify button pops up a table of items found from all identifiable layers at the location clicked on the map. |

The Report button pops up a report including both a summary of crime types found as well as a listing of individual incidents. The resulting report can be toggled on or off until the next search. |

The Print Map button creates a PDF document of the map and legend in a predefined layout. The resulting map document can be viewed, printed, and/or saved to disk. |

The Help button displays this help document. Use the Back button to return to your last map. |

The Legend button is a toggle to turn the pop-up map legend on and off. |
